Set Sail: Master Session with Pirates of the Caribbean Composer Geoff Zanelli
If you’re one of the many millions of filmgoers who has watched the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, you know and love the music of Geoff Zanelli. This multi-talented composer worked under Hans Zimmer on the first four Pirates films before taking the helm for the upcoming fifth installment, Dead Men Tell No Tales. But Zanelli’s abilities go far beyond scoring for big-budget tentpole films. In many ways he’s emblematic of a new generation of composers, equally at home writing for TV (his Emmy-winning score for Into the West) and video games (Star Citizen: Squadron 42), and just as comfortable with organic instrumentation (The Odd Life of Timothy Green) as state-of-the-art digital scoring techniques. In this session, Zanelli dives deep into his approach to music making. He’ll offer a treasure trove of tips and career advice for aspiring composers, and discuss working on the Pirates franchise with Mitchell Leib, President of Music and Soundtracks at Walt Disney Studios.

Next Level: Scoring for Video Games
Remember when video game music meant 4-bit synth melodies, looping ad infinitum? So much has changed since the early ‘80s! As gaming has grown into a multi-billion-dollar global industry, video game music has matured, too. Today’s game composers might be called upon to craft simple background music for casual games, score a climactic fight scene for a full orchestra, or find a way to make the open-ended world of a massively multiplayer online game sound enticing for hours on end. The award-winning composers on this panel are the crème de la crème of video game music. We’ve brought them together to talk about their paths into this unique niche of the composing world, and the creative and business challenges that they’ve encountered on their way to the top. Hit pause, drop your controller and learn from these “final bosses” of video game music.

Black Mozart: Master Session with Ryan Leslie
Ryan Leslie has worn many hats throughout his 20 years in music - chart-topping songwriter, trusted producer, Grammy-nominated recording artist, forward-thinking entrepreneur...the list goes on. And while he’s enjoyed the kind of success that only a select few writer-producers can, Leslie has had to consider the same conundrums that many career music creators do: Who can I trust as a collaborator? Should I shoot for a major label, or go the independent route? Should I compromise my standards for the sake of a hit? In this unique panel, you’ll get a rare glimpse into the evolution of Leslie’s art and career. He’ll play through some of your favorite songs from his deep catalog on the piano, and answer your questions about how he got where he is today - and how you can do the same. People often talk about " the hook" of a song. The reality is...there isn't just one hook in a hit. There are many. In this workshop, Neil will help you do just that in order to help you keep your listeners "hooked" on your song (by multiple prongs) from start to finish.

Getting Credit Where Credit is Due
You got a big break as a co-writer and the track is destined to be a hit. But though people seek out your song on streaming services, your name is nowhere to be found on their webpages or apps. With the demise of liner notes along with the decline in physical music sales, how can songwriters and producers get the recognition they deserve in the virtual world of streaming? Are there any streaming music services or music websites that provide this information for fans? If not, what are the consequences for songwriters, and particularly classical music composers? Is there a next step toward greater recognition on music services? This panel, featuring hit songwriters Desmond Child and Aloe Blacc and composer Alex Shapiro, moderated by music attorney Dina LaPolt, will examine the growing concern about proper credit for songwriters and producers on streaming music services, and what you can do to make sure your work is recognized.

Women in Film Music
There is no sure path to success for any professional composer. The path is even less clear for female composers, who were hired for just 1.4% of the top 800 films from 2007 to 2015, despite equal levels of talent and education as their male peers. Why the disparity, and what can we do to change it? We’re bringing together leading female composers in the film/TV community to share their unique journeys. Through a combination of raw talent and persistence, these women have made an impact and a name for themselves. Male and female composers alike will be empowered by their stories and their fight for equality in film music, and inspired by their advice on overcoming whatever obstacles face you in your musical journey.

Company: The Making of Justin Bieber’s Purpose
ASCAP member Justin Bieber’s fourth studio album Purpose showcased a new direction for the pop icon, and earned critical kudos for both Bieber’s nuanced performance and the album’s forward-thinking, R&B-inflected songs. While the relaxed electro-pop of singles like “What Do You Mean?” and “Company” felt effortless, Purpose was the product of dozens of collaborators, working together to sculpt its perfect hooks and immersive soundscapes. At this fascinating session, you’ll hear stories and insights from some of the songwriters, producers and A&R reps that were instrumental in making Purpose a modern pop classic. This is an unmissable panel for music creators of all stripes, whether or not you’re a true Belieber.
